Richard was first elected in December 2019 as the first ever Conservative Member of Parliament for North West Durham. Following the abolition of that seat by the Boundary Commission, Richard became the Parliamentary candidate for Basildon & Billericay, Essex, where he was re-elected to Parliament in the July 2024 General Election.
